Learning Alternatives

Public schools are a threat to our way of life. And where they're not a threat, they're a poorly organized unproductive time sync. All federal schools should be burned to the ground. However education in hard subjects such as math and science are necessary to understand problems. Going through life without a solid grounding in maths and sciences severely limits your ability to think through problems and be decisive.

The Khan Academy is one beacon of hope in a sea of academic stagnation. To be specific it's a new approach to learning, you can watch the TED video to see more. I see value in this learning format for people whom want to home school their children.

I'm probably a good candidate for looking into these videos myself, seeing as my grasp of math and science is embarrassing. If the future is this type of learning, then we'll be able to take one more step away from society.

Since I homeschool my kids, I gave the Khan Academy serious consideration.  The technology there is very interesting but the content is flawed.  The math content takes an American approach of being purely abstract.  I didn't see any word problems.  Problems of a certain type are repeated until the student gets it right and then the course moves on to the next area and repeats.  In contrast, Singapore Math has fewer problems but each problem makes the student think about what is going on and most problems are word problems.  So this promotes thinking and tying math to the real world.

American math is worse than useless.  It teaches students to follow instructions without understanding what they are doing.  It rewards students for using formulas that they don't understand.  American math turns students into obedient workers and obedient liberals.

There is a section on Singapore math, not sure if this was added since you considered it.

That's new.  It looks like they just started covering Singapore Math and it will be a while before they cover it all.  But this is certainly encouraging.
