I recently finished this book. I think it is the first comedic novel, written around 100 AD in the Roman Empire by a priest of the goddess Isis. It gives a strong flavor of the times and is very entertaining. But the reason I am recommending it here is that I have never read a book so insightful into the nature of women. The book is full of stories with both good and bad women and unstable women who change character based on circumstance. In particular, the short story "Cupid and Psyche" told inside this book is fantastic and perfectly illustrates the female mind. Be sure to get the Robert Graves translation.
